Ten Tunes Week 3 - Mendo's Go To Karaoke Classics

I realized that I forgot this week’s Ten Tunes so I threw together a quick list of my go-to karaoke songs. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some but this is a good starter list.

The top two are kind of no brainers - classics that are good sing-a-long songs. Personally, I like karaoke when everyone sings as opposed to it being a showcase for people who can actually sing and people who DGAF. Most of The Killers’ hits are good for karaoke but Somebody Told Me is tougher than most people remember as there isn’t a lot of time to breathe in there.

Lonely Boy and Hard to Handle are songs that people don’t necessarily know but I can sing pretty well so they are always a good fallback option for me. Hard to Handle also has the bonus of allowing you to yell “Third verse, same as the first!” before kicking into the final part of the song.

Under Pressure is my favorite karaoke duet option.

I’m Not OK is great if it’s a more energetic/louder crowd.

Connection is probably the weakest option on here but it was my best reviews at Gong Show Karaoke (Wednesday nights at Uncle Ollie’s Penthouse in DTLA) so it holds a place in my heart (although I got lucky and the judges loved Elastica so I feel like the song choice did more work than my performance) But perhaps it’s biggest strength is that it’s only two minutes and twenty seconds long so it’s great for people who are being hassled to sing but just want to get it over with.

Glory Days hits a little too close to home now which may be a good or bad thing in terms of how the crowd responds. I also feel like it is starting to slip through the cracks; I’m not sure which Springsteen songs are really going to get heavy play with the younger generations.

Freedom ‘90 is a great option except for one thing.- It’s over 6 minutes long.

Obviously, I couldn’t leave Foxy Shazam’s ode to big black women out even though I definitely think it’s a safer option in a private karaoke. I should give it a shot next time I do Gong Show Karaoke.
